Breaking the silence

Well, it’s been a while. If you’re getting this email and we haven’t communicated in any other way since my last post, you might be tempted to think I’ve become a monk or otherwise entered some sort of Luddite phase. That’s not the case! I’ve just been very busy, for many reasons. But aren’t we all busy? That’s a boring excuse.

Really what’s been happening is that I’ve been doing more across every phase of my various “jobs”—priesting, chaplaining, etc. (And on my last official day working here in Hamilton, yesterday, I baptized twins!). But I’ve also been preparing for a big move!

The VST building on the campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver!

I’m really honoured to share that I’ve been appointed Associate Professor and Director of Anglican Formation and Studies at the Vancouver School of Theology. That means that I’ll be doing some teaching in areas of Anglican theology/practice/history/whatnot and also some other theology/Bible/church history courses as they come up. It also means that I’ll be directing[? supervising? mentoring?] the Anglican students at VST who are at various stages of their theological education. Many of them are preparing for ordained ministry.

So. This is a big responsibility! And the path to pursuing this role had many fits and starts as I hemmed and hawed about calling, or vocation, or fitment, or any number of things. Confidence, for sure. The process has been surprising and joyful, but also has involved tough decisions, as any huge move does. But I was really, really impressed with what I discovered in the faculty, students, campus…everything. There have been a number of “close calls” for me in the past several years, and in hindsight (because that’s the only sort of sight humans have, unfortunately) I am amazed so many things have happened to keep me where I am for the moment in order to be prepared for this next set of moments out in Vancouver.

Anyway. This isn’t the last you’ve heard from me. More to come!

Wow! Charles, congratulations! What fabulous news! I wish you all of God’s blessings. The students at VST will certainly be blessed. Will miss you in Niagara, but I look forward to hearing how things unfold. All the very best, my friend.
